On Wednesday, July 29th, the U.S. Senate will hold a hearing on campus sexual assault. The hearing will be held by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM. A live stream of the hearing is available and can be found here along with a listing of the hearing participants.
The subject of the hearing is entitled “Reauthorizing the Higher Education Act: Combating Campus Sexual Assault.” The particulars of the hearing are not specified on the committee’s page. However, a review of list of witnesses gives a hint that an aspect of the hearing will be to focus on addressing sexual assault with additional legislation.
It is noted that Senators Gillibrand and McCaskill appear on the first panel, both of whom have been critical of the higher education community on the issue of sexual assault. Further, Senator Gillibrand is the sponsor of the “Campus Accountability and Safety Act” a newly introduced piece of legislation that will add to the regulatory obligations and burdens being imposed by state and federal governments. It can be safely assumed that this proposed legislation will be the subject of some portion of this hearing.
